Acupuncture
Can acupuncture really help my pet? Acupuncture is a treatment method that is commonly used in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) for treatment and prevention of disease in animals. Though it has been used for thousands of years, it is only starting to become common and more widely accepted in Western Veterinary Medicine. Acupuncture needles are placed in specific locations throughout the body with the goal to stimulate certain acupuncture points (acupoints). These acupoints are used to diagnose a problem or to help bring the body back into balance to treat a disease. Acupoints are typically located near blood vessels, nerves, muscles, or lymph vessels. As time has progressed the needles used for acupuncture have also changed, now needles are sterile single use hypodermic needles.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a variety of diseases in our beloved animals, from joint and back pain, to stomach and intestinal issues, to eye and nerve problems. The benefit of acupuncture can be quite beneficial for our pets, but not every pet responds the same to treatment. Though both TCVM and WVM may appear quite different initially, both have the same end goal: promote health and prevent disease.
