City of Hope | Santa Clarita Radiation Oncology: State-of-the-Art Technology and Increased Comfort
Local services for cancer patients are about to get an upgrade, as City of Hope Santa Clarita Radiation Oncology completes its move to a new facility. The clinic will be brighter and larger, with new, state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment.
“A prime motivator for the move is to upgrade the entire treatment experience,” said May Lin Tao, M.D., M.S., assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology at City of Hope.
The practice, which launched as a satellite of City of Hope in April 2018 in partnership with U.S. Oncology Network, has been the Santa Clarita Valley’s sole provider of radiation therapy for decades. The new location will be at 26357 McBean Parkway, Suite 150, in Santa Clarita. Consultations there begin on November 9, 2020, and treatment commences by November 16.
One pivotal element of the move is the installation of the leading-edge Varian Halcyon system for radiation treatment. The machine is optimized for patient comfort, furnishing a softly lit, soothing environment. It functions quietly and features a spacious treatment area with an ergonomically designed couch.
Importantly, the Halcyon system reduces patients’ time in the machine by as much as half.
“This system is very fast in terms of both imaging and treatments,” said Caitlin Gomez, M.D., City of Hope assistant clinical professor of radiation oncology. “That’s a lot less time lying still on the treatment table.”
The new space will also present a more open atmosphere overall, with designated areas providing more privacy for patients.
Relocating the Santa Clarita practice is emblematic of City of Hope’s approach throughout the pandemic: COVID-19 doesn’t stop for cancer, so neither does City of Hope.
“Our patients find it very comforting to know about everything we’re doing to protect them,” Tao said.
The new radiation oncology site is just one more element of City of Hope’s commitment to providing hope and healing to the people of the Santa Clarita Valley.
“We’re dedicated to maintaining the best possible cancer outcomes for our patients,” Gomez said.
