Laughing with Di – November 2020
In 1939, Winston Churchill uttered one of his famous quotes, “a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.” We have all heard this at one time or another but we can never remember the exact order or the correct words when we want to use them to sound witty. Mr. Churchill was referring to Russia. I think he was referring to drying fitted sheets.
Let’s have a laugh…
You see, when I wash three, queen-size, fitted sheets at the same time, take them out of the washer, shake them out and put them in the dryer one by one, the laws of physics (laws of nature? laws of the land?) change the outcome one would expect when they are removed. They become the garnet one wrapped in the pastel blue one inside the dragonfly patterned one. It’s a cleansing wrapped in a softener inside heated circular motion. This does not happen with three top sheets washed separately. I can’t imagine what the drying conclusion would be to a sextet of sheets. Well, yes, I can. That’s why I now wash them separately.
It’s like our future wrapped in suspense inside crossed fingers. As I write this, I have no knowledge of the outcome of events in motion, unless it is my sheets drying. They do reveal themselves in the end as happily dry, which is what is supposed to happen. Let’s hope dry happens.
“Never . . . was so much owed by so many to so few.” Again, Churchill was paying tribute to the fortitude of the RAF. I think those words capture how during this season of giving thanks, we do the same to first responders, fire fighters and all those working on the supply/service sidelines.
Use your abilities to be thankful and safe. Just stay out of your dryer.
Happy Thanksgiving.
