#SaugusStrong A Day of Remembrance
This November marks one year since tragedy struck our quiet little community. On November 14, 2019 a troubled student walked onto the campus of Saugus High School and opened fire on the quad injuring three students and killing two others before turning the gun on himself. This sent shockwaves across the nation and our lives have forever changed. This month we honor those students that we lost, Dominic Blackwell and Gracie Ann Muehlberger and the rest of the Centurions as we continue to be #Saugusstrong.
In the days that followed the tragedy our community banded together to begin the healing process. With over 15,000 people in attendance: teachers, students, dignitaries, community leaders and more came together to share our condolences with the families of those who were there. As we continue to rebuild the pieces, our community has been campaigning to have Central Park renamed in Memoriam to Gracie and Dominic so that we will never forget the impact these kids had on the Santa Clarita Valley. Central park was the place the children and staff members were evacuated to on the day of the shooting it was also the place where our community held its vigil three days later.
To celebrate the lives of the Centurion pride and the #SaugusStrong movement Saugus High School is putting together a virtual “Unity of Community” event. Two aspects of the event will be a Spoken Word contest and a Solo Vocal Performance. Students have submitted an original poem on the topic “Unity of Community” and will be singing a self-selected song about Unity (maximum 3 minutes in length). For more information on this event please email the coordinating staff: rbahr@hartdistrict.org. This event will also feature words from local non-profits that are offering services for FREE for Saugus students.
