The Two Kinds of People In This World
Bob Wiley had this to say about life: There are two kinds of people in this world; Those that like Neil Diamond, and those that don’t. Hopefully some of you will recognize this observation from the 1991 movie, “What About Bob?”. Me, I like Neil Diamond. I am not just talking about the “bop bop bop” of Sweet Caroline, which, by the way, was never meant to be part of the song. It was added by his fans later. I am talking more about this prophetic language from Shilo. “Had a dream and it filled me with wonder. She had other plans.” Pure poetry. But for the number of words, and his copyright, I would be making T-Shirts.
But alas, this article is not really about Neil Diamond. Just as it is not about The Sneetches. Remember them, I hope? Dr Suess’s Star-bellied and plain bellied sneetches? I recently re-watched Bob, Dr. Marvin and his “fam” and when Bob told us about the two different kinds of people in this world, I immediately thought of our impending election. The absurdity of differentiating people by whether or not they like Neil Diamond, or have stars on their bellies or not. That is what this article is really about.
So, please, with the election looming and tensions running high, remember that we are all Americans. And, if you are not a fan of Neil Diamond, I suggest you wait a few years and listen again. Perhaps his greatest lesson can be found in his song, “Being Done To Soon.” There, he spends a minute or two shouting out the names of what appears to be random people, having nothing in common. Please remember this was done years before REM’s It’s The End of The World” and Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”. But I digress. Anyway, we get to Neil’s last verse where he tells us what they all had in common. They had “sweated beneath the same sun, looked up in wonder at the same moon, and wept when it was all done, for being done too soon.” My point is not to depress you, but to make you take a step back and realize that no matter who gets elected, life will continue. For you Scarface fans, “Every day above the ground is a good day.” Get out there and Vote! Even you Usher loving Millennials.
