Through the Eyes of Gratitude
Have you ever noticed the expression on a person’s face when they are grateful? The words “Thank you”, hardly ever escape someone’s lips without one prerequisite – they are smiling when they say them. I find it so interesting that presently, when half of our faces are covered by masks, so much feeling can come from the look in a person’s eyes. These days, gratitude be seen and felt not by a person’s smile, but by the efforts to make lingering eye contact when grateful words are spoken.
Each of my days at Oakmont of Santa Clarita and Oakmont of Valencia are rewarding for so many reasons. We absorb our resident’s heartfelt laughter because it’s contagious and we know they are thriving. There is no feeling like knowing that you helped make a positive difference in the lives of others.
I always look forward to the stories our residents tell me about events they’ve had to overcome in their lives – they give me hope for the future in these trying times. Last week, I helped a lovely lady move into her beautiful apartment home. I was waiting for her when she arrived at Oakmont I could be there when she saw it for the first time. I watched her take it all in as she decided where her furniture should be placed – she admired the arched doorways, the 10-foot ceilings, the oversized windows allowing the perfect amount of natural light to fill the living room. She looked at me said, “If I’d known that this beautiful place is where I would wind up in my later years, I wouldn’t have worried so much about growing older!” She thanked me with her eyes, and so did her family as they stood behind her. I hope they know I can feel their smiles even when I can’t see them.
