30th Anniversary of Being a Lawyer!
2021 marks my 30th year anniversary of becoming a lawyer. The diploma on the wall proves my admittance to the Bar in 1991. In some ways, time has flown by. In other ways, it seems like three lifetimes have passed. I remember clearly being a young attorney, researching legal issues by using REAL books and not the internet. I was thinking “will I ever know enough to really FEEL like a lawyer?” Now, after 30 years, and thousands of clients, I truly do FEEL like a lawyer.
On a daily basis, I use time-tested lawyering skills to listen carefully, explain options, and solve problems that seem unsolvable. Those lawyering skills developed with time and experience – just like wrinkles and grey hair.
So what advice do I have after 30 years of lawyering? Here it is: acknowledge that health crises can strike unexpectedly. Acknowledge that death is inevitable, and often occurs without warning. Acknowledge that long-term care facilities are full of people who never thought they would be there. Throw out the “it will never happen to me” beliefs.
Someone you love or care about may have to make decisions for you, manage your affairs, or settle your estate. In order to do this, they will need to use your legal documents. Make sure you have a solid, up-to-date Estate Plan, and it is easily accessible. Make sure that your assets are funded into the Trust, and proper beneficiaries are named on retirement assets.
Feel free to take this advice from an attorney celebrating her 30-year anniversary and pass it on to your loved ones.
