The Five Element Theory in TCVM
The Five Element Theory in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (and Chinese human medicine) is the 2,000-year-old thought that all beings cycle through different “seasons” or phases of life. The phases correspond to elements which are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Everyone’s personality is also aligned with a specific element. A Wood Element animal is dominant and can be aggressive. They are confident, athletic, and fearless. When unbalanced, they can be angry, growl or bite and can be prone to liver or eye problems, and potentially seizures as well. A Fire Element animal is friendly, playful, and sensitive. They can be noisy and want to be the center of attention. When unbalanced, they can be hyperactive, anxious and can be prone to heart conditions or behavioral problems. An Earth Element animal is typically laid back and easy going. They are friendly but slow moving and do not need to be the center of attention. They are tolerant and sweet. When unbalanced, they are prone to excessive worry, obesity, and gastrointestinal disorders. A Metal Element animal is more aloof. They are independent and like order and rules. They do not like change and so when unbalanced can become sad or depressed and are prone to lung disorders. A Water Element animal is timid and shy. They can be fearful and nervous. They will go into “fight or flight” or just completely withdraw. When unbalanced, they are prone to kidney disease, arthritis, and premature aging. All individuals have each element within them, however, usually have one element predominant. Each element cycles into each other and can give energy to or take energy from each of the other ones. These traits also tell the practitioner how well they may respond to acupuncture, with Fire and Wood animals typically tolerating less needles but responding quicker to treatment.
