Find the Right Paint Color for Any Room
You Have Some Choices to Make
Perhaps you’re decorating a room for an upcoming child, maybe you’re renovating a new home, or you just wanted a new feel to your living space.
Whatever the reason, paint color has the ability to profoundly change any room. Get it right and you have a comfortable space you enjoy being in. Get it wrong and a room can be dark, boring, and unwelcoming.
To avoid the latter, follow these tips on selecting the right color for any room.
First, Learn How Colors Work
When it comes to colors, there are some terms and characteristics you should be aware of.
Primary Colors
These are base colors that are mixed together to create new colors. Red, yellow, and blue are the three primary colors. For example, you’d mix red and blue to make purple.
Secondary Colors
Green, orange, and purple are the three secondary colors. These colors can only be achieved by mixing two primary colors.
Hue
Yes, there’s Blue, but there’s also sky blue dark blue, navy blue, etc. These are hues. There are thousands of hues that stem from the six main colors.
There’s a lot more to individual colors, like tint, tone, shade, and temperature. For example, warmer colors show more orange or yellow, and cool colors show more blue or purple.
Find Reference Points to Match
When choosing colors for a room, look at what will be featured in the room. Is it a full bedroom set? A sofa or sectional? Kitchen cabinets? It could be as simple as a piece of art that you love. It’s a lot easier to change a paint color than to purchase and install furniture.
So, pick the focal point in the room and try to pick a color that either matches or complements well.
Create a Color Scheme
You don’t have to treat every room as its own entity. In fact, they aren’t. Each room makes up the environment within your home, and you want that environment to be comforting, cohesive, and welcoming.
So even if you aren’t painting every room in the house, as you work on some, strive to have them connect with the overall color scheme.
How to decide on a color scheme? Well, again look at your furniture. But also consider lighting, layout, and whether your home is modern or more traditional. You can either create a color scheme yourself with help from a paint expert or use an array of online tools that help put compatible colors together.
Stock Up on Samples
How will a color look in your space? It’s hard to know exactly without actually painting, but sample cards are a great way to compare colors and color schemes.
Take home samples that you like and put them on the wall in the designated room. Look at the colors under the lights, in the dark, when the sun is out, when the blinds are closed, and so on. This process will help you make a final decision you’re confident will work.
If you can, purchase a small amount of the paint and actually put it on the wall. The best-case scenario is you love it and you have a head start! Worst case scenario is you paint over it.
Get What You Want
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you’re happy with your paint color choices. You can try putting together a color scheme or exact-matching, but if you’re not happy in the space, it all means nothing.
So when shopping, keep your taste in mind. It’s your home, after all!
