Separation Anxiety – Stevenson Ranch Veterinary Center
Like many people, my husband and I adopted a new pet during the COVID pandemic. We didn’t mean to. We weren’t looking for a new dog. But late one night we were driving home and a stray dog ran out in front of our car. What was amazing about this dog was that he ran out in front of our car, then laid down! We were able to trace his microchip to his previous owner, who no longer wanted him and suddenly we had a new dog.
Then the world stopped. Or seemed to. My husband was suddenly working from home instead of going into an office. This new dog never had a chance to experience our life before COVID. New dog became my husband’s constant partner, which was great. Until he tried to leave. Poor new dog didn’t know what to do. Little did we know, new dog has severe separation anxiety. What could we do?
Fortunately, there are lots of things we can try to help with separation anxiety. Unfortunately, there is not one-size-fits-all treatment plans. You have to keep trying until you find something that works for you and your pet.
We first tried some behavior modification. This is key no matter what else you do. Leave your pet for short periods of time. Vary your routine when you leave so they don’t anticipate you walking out the door. Leave and come right back in. Don’t get your pet overly excited when you leave or when you return.
Next we tried some holistic therapies like calming chews, a Thundershirt, and pheromone collars. We left tasty distracting treats to keep him occupied. We left the TV on for noise. When those did not help, we tried different anti-anxiety medications.
If your dogs are suffering from separation anxiety, try some of the above options. Don’t hesitate to call your veterinarian for help. We want everyone to be a stress free as possible!
