Let’s Be Careful Out There
Some of you might remember that phrase from the morning roll call of the hit T.V. Show N.Y.P.D. Blue. Those of you would be wrong. N.Y.P.D. Blue starred, amongst others, David Caruso, who I had the pleasure of meeting a few years back thanks to my paperboy/and dog walker in Rockland County, New York.
Actually, the thanks goes to my client who worked on CSI Miami. We confirmed how small the world was when I told her that my old dog walker/paperboy just happened to be Adam Rodriguez. My client put me back in touch with Adam, who showed me around the set and introduced me to Mr. Caruso. David told me he was thankful for us lawyers, because we kept him out of trouble. But I digress.
The phrase is actually from the other hit cop show, Hill Street Blues, and it is uttered in every occurrence of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus’s (Michael Conrad) morning roll call. My context of the phrase is meant with respect to a long time addiction of mine: Offer-up. That is an application for your phone which allows you to look for all kinds of stuff, some of which can be hard to find. This holiday season I was looking for a Play Station 5. MSRP on the one with a disc drive is $400.00. But because of no supply, they are being sold for around $650.00 and up.
About two weeks ago, I saw an ad for a PS-5 disc player in Anaheim for $520 and quickly contacted the seller. He gave me his address and I started the long drive down to Anaheim.
As I was driving, he asked me if I could Zelle or Pay Pal the money. I grew up on the streets of New York and was immediately wary of the request. I asked why, and he said that his father was afraid of fake 100 dollar bills. That made some sense. I figured as long as he was outside with the PS-5, I could zelle the money and when it went through, he would give me the PS5. Upon further thought, this was good for me too, because I did not have to carry the cash. We both would win. If only.
When I got there, he refused to come out until after I had zelled him the money. I called on the phone and luckily for me, a person picked up who told me that someone had cloned his phone and was ripping people off using his phone number. He told me to run away as fast as I could. While I was quite upset about having to make the return trip without the PS-5, at least I still had my cash. I found a much better deal later that night (5 sealed games, an extra remote, and the cooling fan for $650) met the guy at the Ikea parking lot in Burbank and all went well. To you all I say, Let’s Be Careful Out There!
