Celebrating Pride In the SCV
In June of 2019, long-time SCV resident and activist Malcolm Blue pioneered the Santa Clarita city council to officially declare June as Pride month. This declaration was renewed in June of 2020 for every year from now on. This was a huge step in recognizing and hearing the voices of the LGBTQ population in Santa Clarita. Here are a few organzations if you or anyone in your family needs it.
PFLAG SCV
PFLAG is the first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender , and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents and families, and allies. Our local chapter, PFLAG SCV usually meets via Zoom or in person on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the multi purpose room at St. Stephens Church on Orchard Village Rd. Our local chapter was founded in 1988 and continues to thrive and grow. You can connect with us on Instagram @pflag.scv, Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pflagscv, website pflagscv.net, and email info@pflag.net. We rely on membership dues to run our programs. Membership is $20 for student, $35 for individual and $50 for family. You can make a donation or join at paypal.me/pflagscv.
Queer SCV
Queer SCV was launched in 2018 with the purpose of building community and reducing social isolation for our LGBTQ+ residents. This is accomplished through hosting a variety of inclusive, intersectional social events like game nights, Rainbow Reads book club, hiking, and more. Queer SCV plans monthly social activities for queer adults, semi-annual Allyship & Safe Zone Trainings for allies, and works with the Santa Clarita Public Library to provide programming for LGBTQ+ teens.
SCV LGBTQ Center
Founded around the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, April 2020, the SCV LGBTQ Center was a budding seed that began to take root in the minds of Finley Walker as he pondered the lack of structured resources and community in Santa Clarita, Finley’s hometown and place of residence for over 20 years. He set to work and spread the word, quickly gaining a passionate following and the support of several organizations such as Queer SCV and PFLAG of SCV.
The Center recruited several incredible members and allies of the local LGBTQ community to work towards the goal of establishing a permanent location in Santa Clarita to home the SCV LGBTQ Center.
