Pet Preparedness Month
Valley Lyons Veterinary Hospital is here to help you provide the best possible care for your four-legged friend. And in honor of Pet Preparedness Month – which takes place every June – here a few practical tips to ensure you are prepared to handle a disaster involving your pets. Whether it’s a fire, injury, severe storm, or another type of emergency, being prepared could save your beloved companion’s life.
Update Their Identification Info: All pets should wear identification tags and be microchipped. If your pet’s ID tag or the contact info contained in their microchip account is outdated, it will do little to help reunite you with your furry friend if they ever get lost. Double-check that the contact information on their tag is correct and legible
Put Together a Pet Emergency Kit: A pet emergency kit should contain everything you would need to care for your pet for a few days in the event of an emergency. It should be kept in an easy-to-access location, and it should be ready to grab at a moment’s notice in case you ever need to evacuate with your pet. When assembling your kit, it does not need to be anything fancy. It should, however, contain a few important things:
• Copies of your pet’s vaccination records and health history
• A recent photograph
• A five-day supply of clean water and food
• Bowls (collapsible ones work great)
• Litter box and litter (If you have cats)
• Extra collar and leash
• A well-stocked pet first aid kit
• A list of hotels and shelters in your area that allow pets (in case you need to evacuate your home)
Get Advice from a Vet in Santa Clarita: Schedule an appointment with your pet’s vet in Santa Clarita. In addition to making sure your pet is healthy and current on all their vaccinations, a vet can help you better understand your pet’s needs and what they might require in an emergency.
