Youth Led Nonprofit Surpasses 35,000 Books Donated
College Senior Mackenzie Krestul’s charity, Code Read, held a free book fair at Palmdale Learning Plaza on April 26. Students worked hard to meet goals set by their teachers and were rewarded by choosing free books provided by Code Read.
Founded in May 2016, fueled by her own passion for reading and creative writing, founder Mackenzie Krestul wanted to provide books to those who need it most.
“Everyone deserves books of their own at home, books that they enjoy and make them feel passionate about reading. It’s especially important for children, not only because having books improves literacy levels and academic performance, but also because it’s important to have a creative outlet and a safe place to imagine.” commented Mackenzie Krestul
With the support of her siblings, Jordan a junior at UCLA and Madelyn an eighth grader at Sierra Vista Junior High, Mackenzie has surpassed over 35,000 new books donated. Code Read has been awarded grants from organizations including The Nora Roberts Foundation, The Los Angeles Clippers, Walmart Foundation, International Paper Company, The Water Buffalo Club and Karma for Cara.
In addition to supporting youth at Title 1 elementary schools, Code Read also partners with Los Angeles Family Housing, Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services, Children’s Bureau, and Head Start.
