Fireworks Injuries
The Fourth of July is a time for celebration, good food and fireworks! As exciting as it all is, please be sure to remain fire-safe this holiday. In doing so, here are a few tips and reminders to consider:
With the exception of a professional fireworks show, fireworks are illegal in the City of Santa Clari-ta. Although much effort goes into enforcing the “no fireworks” law, we can still hear them go off in our city. Lighting fireworks comes with a significant risk for burns. Even with some legal fire-works, such as sparklers under 10 inches long, there is still associated risk involved. Most commonly there are injuries to hands, but also a risk of injuries to eyes, neck, ears, and legs. According to the latest United States Consumer Product Safety Commission’s report, at least 18 people died from fireworks -related incidents in 2020, and approximately 15,600 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency departments nationwide.
If you sustain a minor burn, you can cool the burn down with cool water; do not use cold water or ice as it can cause further damage to your skin. Refrain from applying ointments or fragranced lo-tion as this can delay healing and further complicate the wound. Loosely cover the wound with a non-stick sterile bandage. And do not puncture if any blister forms. Know that with any open wound there is a risk for infection so be watchful for fever, chills, or increased redness around the wound that may develop.
It is best to have any burn evaluated by a medical professional to be safe. For any burn larger than the injured person’s hand, or for any eye injuries, seek medical attention immediately.
Wishing you a happy and safe 4th of July!
