Fire Safety for Your Cat
The California fire season is upon us. Last month we celebrated National Pet Fire Safety Day (July 15th), we feel it is important to remind our fellow cat lovers these few safety tips to keep in mind or to plan ahead in case of emergency. Though you may know some of these recommendations, we want to make sure everyone knows how to keep their cat safe!
Our first tip is make sure your smoke detectors are all in good working order, and that extinguishers in the house are up to date and everyone knows where they are located. It is also a good idea to go over with everybody in the home to ensure they all know how to use an extinguisher. Here at The Cat Doctor, we train all of our employees on how to properly use one in case of emergency. We do have 5 extinguishers located throughout our hospital.
The second tip is to clear dried plant brush and trash from around your property.
Tip number 3, in case of a fire have an exit plan. What is your exit plan for the cat? What if your cat likes to hide? Where are you going to take him or her? These are questions that are likely to leave you wondering what to do. Here’s what we suggest. Keep carriers out all the time so your cat can acclimate and get comfortable, making it easier to get them out quickly. If you are in a 2-story house, start keeping a carrier on both stories. Many Veterinary Hospitals will offer evacuation boarding for those affected. However, it is possible that some may have limited room, so talk to friends and family about housing your pets in the case of emergency evacuations.
Tip number 4, put together a pet emergency pack. Just like one for us humans, this can be an old backpack that you put in a small supply of medication, food, and some bottled water. I would also consider a disposable litter box or puppy pads. We would recommend 5-7 days-worth of supplies.
After talking to one of our local Fire Captains, I learned that all fire trucks now carry pet oxygen masks on board to administer life-saving oxygen to your cat if needed. Human life is the most important, but they will also do their best to rescue any animals they may see. To make things easier for you, your cat, and emergency personnel, go over these tips and start applying them today!
