Minor Irritations
I don’t like it when people call me “Boss” in a situation where I am not their boss. It always comes across as a little cocky and arrogant. I don’t like it.
Another thing I don’t like is that we have an entire generation of people who don’t say “You’re Welcome” when someone says, “Thank You.” They say “No problem” instead. I don’t like it. When I say “Thank You” to someone, it’s an expression of gratitude, not a suggestion that there might have been a problem.
I’m pretty sure you work here, so I think handing me an iced tea across the counter was part of your job. It shouldn’t be a problem. The only way I could see it being a problem is if you don’t know what iced tea is, or if you are out of cups, or if you suddenly lost control of your arms and you had to push the iced tea across the counter with your head. And by the way, I’m not your boss. If I was your boss, I would have you clean the Men’s Room.
I wouldn’t even mind it if they said it with a smile and a modicum of sincerity, but they don’t. They say it with one eyebrow arched as if they are being inconvenienced and distracted from their phone.
At some places they say “My pleasure” which is nice, but it might be a little over the top. Really, it gave you pleasure handing me a chicken sandwich? You must be very easy to please.
It can also come across a little creepy. for example, when you say thank you to your plumber for unclogging your toilet, you don’t want him smiling at you and saying, “My Pleasure!” And you don’t want “No Problem” either. At $120 an hour it better not be a problem. “You’re Welcome” will do just fine.
I have a terrific lineup of Comedy Shows for you this month with a couple Special Events. I will even be headlining one myself on August 13. Stop by. No Problem.
