Vital X-rays for Your Dental Health
There are many concerns that come to mind when visiting the dentist; one frequently expressed concern is that of possible over exposure to radiation from dental x-rays. What many patients do not realize is that the benefits of having x-rays taken regularly, greatly outweigh the risk of the minimal exposure to radiation.
X-rays allow dental professionals to see areas of decay, periodontal disease, bone loss and abscesses to name just a few. Digital x-rays have given dentist the ability to take a more in-depth look at teeth and bone by allowing them to resize an x-ray, change contrast and compare multiple x-rays with the click of a button.
Now that we know the benefits of these films to the clinical staff let’s look at how this new system of x-rays is beneficial to you, the patient. Past studies have shown that 18 dental films, equivalent to a full set of x-rays, delivers less radiation than an upper or lower GI series, less radiation than a chest x-ray and even less radiation then earth and atmosphere radiation. Digital x-rays further reduce a patient’s exposure to radiation by up to 80 percent. With no films to process with digital x-rays they eliminated the need to store and dispose of hazardous chemicals and reduce the consumption of plastic wrappers and the lead backing that protect each film.
Our digital x-ray system has made our practice more efficient; it’s kept us up to date with the latest technology, but most of all is safer for our patients. Digital x-rays are a win-win for our patients and our environment.
