What You Should Know About Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids
In August 2017, a law passed allowing hearing aids to be sold over the counter instead of by a trained hearing healthcare professional. These devices will be FDA regulated and while they have not been brought to market yet, they will likely be available to consumers in the next few years. Here’s what you need to know:
OTC Hearing Aids vs PSAPs
It’s important to know that OTC hearing aids will differ from something we now refer to as PSAPs or Personal Sound Amplification Product. PSAPs are not regulated by the FDA, and they cannot be marketed to consumers as devices that improve impaired hearing. They claim to amplify sound, not compensate for hearing loss. On the other hand, OTC hearing aids will be marketed to treat mild-moderate hearing loss.
OTC is Not a Replacement
Today’s hearing aids require advanced technology to be scaled down to fit comfortably behind or inside your ear. Hearing aids have the ability to quickly process information and adapt to different environments. Many have features such as tinnitus therapy, feedback cancellation, internet streaming capabilities and more. They must be made to withstand sweat, earwax, and other elements. What OTC has to offer has not been determined; however, we can estimate that there will be a difference in value.
OTC Hearing Aids Do Not Eliminate the Need for Professional Care
Hearing healthcare professionals provide so much more than hearing aids. They offer comprehensive care, can fit a hearing device to your needs, and will provide follow-up care and adjustments. Sometimes hearing difficulties are caused by minor to serious health conditions. It could be dangerous to bypass a professional who would be able to identify those conditions.
