Adulting is Hard: JCI Santa Clarita is Here to Help A FREE Financial Education Simulation for Teens Called Get Real: Adulting 101
Junior Chamber International of Santa Clarita (JCI Santa Clarita) has organized a FREE financial education simulation for Santa Clarita area high school juniors and seniors called “Get Real: Adulting 101”. The event takes place September 10, 2022 from 10 am – 4 pm at The Centre (20880 Centre Pointe Pkwy, Santa Clarita, CA 91350).
“We have designed a fun and interactive game to test how well our teens can manage a budget,” said J.R. Hills, co-chair of Get Real: Adulting 101. Participants will get a fake identity with a career and salary. They’ll visit booths to buy goods and services essential to living, like housing, transportation, and food. Each booth will have a menu of options with a range of prices. Participants will have to decide if they want to max out their budget or be frugal. There will be surprise situations presented to them such as coming into some extra cash or having to cover an unexpected expense like a car accident. The goal is to end the game with money in the bank.
“We expect students to have a great deal of fun working through their spending options and coming to terms with the cost of daily life,” said Kari McCoy, Co-chair of Get Real: Adulting 101.
Booths are sponsored and run by local businesses. “We were targeting ten sponsors this year. Due to the excitement around the event, we were able to secure thirteen sponsors. Our sponsors help us make this event free for the students. We can’t express how grateful we are for our sponsors and the support we’ve received,” said J.R.
Christy Grable of 9Round kickbox fitness studio shared why she decided to sponsor. “I’m so excited for this opportunity for our youth! Taking full responsibility of your financial life is empowering. It’s a skill that all teens should learn before they hit adulthood. Not only am I sponsoring the event, but my son will be participating.”
Participants will be eligible to win a variety of prizes, including MB2 Entertainment play cards and Starbucks gift cards. Registration is FREE.
