COC’s Emergency Medical Technician Program: Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence
Mark your calendars: On Thursday, Sept. 29, we at College of the Canyons will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program!
The second oldest program of its kind in Los Angeles County, COC’s EMT program has trained more than 5,000 EMT students since 1972.
We are so proud of all the achievements of our EMT students, many who have become familiar faces at our local hospitals and emergency rooms.
Over the years, our EMT graduates have gone on to work on ambulances, doctor’s offices, as well as county or municipal agencies like the Department of Health. Other EMT graduates have furthered their education and entered the fire service or the medical field as nurses, physician assistants, and doctors.
The semester-long course HLHSCI-151 offered at COC prepares students for certification and employment as EMTs. The class includes emergency department and ambulance clinical observations. Upon successfully completing the course, students are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT examination.
The college’s EMT program is approved by Los Angeles County EMS Agency State of California and the National Registry of EMTs.
The EMT program’s longstanding reputation of excellence would not be possible without the tireless dedication, passion, and vision of our EMT program staff and faculty members.
It comes to no surprise that COC’S EMT program has been named a “Strong Workforce Star” by the Chancellor’s Office of the California Community Colleges.
We are looking forward to honoring the EMT program—along with its staff, faculty, and students—on September 29 for some well-deserved recognition.
The bicentennial celebration of our EMT program will include a short ceremony and guest speakers to mark this momentous occasion.
The celebration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Valencia campus. Additional details will be announced soon, but we hope to see you there!
