The Importance of Purpose
I recently read a well-meaning piece of encouragement on social media. It was entitled, “Creating A Day Worth Living.” As I read through an itemized list of advice, I wondered how people in different phases of adulthood would define a “worthy” life. Instructions on this list included getting up early, finding fun things to do, incorporating exercise on a daily basis, expressing gratitude, learning to do something new – all which are great suggestions. The list was missing one key detail that I think some take for granted until suddenly it becomes hard to find, especially in older adults who live alone and may have limited access to opportunities. The item I am talking about is purpose.
At Oakmont of Valencia and Oakmont of Santa Clarita, we specialize in creating exciting and meaningful experiences that involve a sense of purpose. Our residents have volunteer opportunities to make a positive impact on others such as participating in The Walk to End Alzheimer’s in just a few weeks. They also find joy in making care packages for people undergoing hardships, growing herbs, fruits, and vegetables in our raised garden beds which our culinary team uses for all to enjoy, or just being part of a welcoming group when a new resident moves in. The rewards that come from being needed are priceless.
Speaking of purpose and exciting reasons to rise every morning, check out the Facebook pages for Oakmont of Valencia and Oakmont of Santa Clarita to see how we spent our summer! Have a look at the multiple celebrations, beach excursions, museums we visited, restaurants we enjoyed, and the events we attended.
