Environmental Enrichment for Felines
Prior to owning a cat, it is extremely important that their new home is properly prepared so that when they are brought home, they adapt very quickly and become comfortable. Cats can be very independent, so allowing them to have plenty of room to roam as well as filling these areas with cat furniture, toys, litter boxes, food, and water is essential to creating a positive environment for them.
There are some owners that think that scratching is bad behavior for felines, however, this is very normal for them. If you are worried about your furniture being affected by this, you should provide scratching furniture that may include scratching posts or scratching pads. If they do not show interest at first, placing catnip on these surfaces may help.
Providing plenty of toys for your cat(s) will help you bond with them as well as encourage happy behavior. There are many different types out there that are available. One thing that should really be considered is safety. Sometimes there are feathers, string, or other dangerous pieces on toys that may cause serious illness—even surgery in your feline. You should always supervise your cats when playing with toys or avoid purchasing these types of toys to prevent these situations.
Depending on the amount of cats you have, you must provide a proper amount of litter boxes throughout their home. Even having a single cat, there should be multiple locations so that this encourages good elimination behavior. It is important to note, placing these litter boxes in safe, private locations is a good idea as well.
Lastly, food and water is crucial for any pet, especially cats. They are predisposed to renal failure so in order to prevent this, feeding a wet food diet regularly will help keep them leaner. Placing plenty of water dishes or even considering a water fountain designed for cats helps to encourage better drinking habits which will overall keep them hydrated as well. It is also important to not place food and water bowls adjacent to each other.
All in all, there are various factors to consider to provide the best environmental enrichment for felines. If these topics above are considered, this should help to decrease risks of depression, anxiety, or unwanted behaviors. Creating a positive territory for them helps to encourage the best behavior for felines which ultimately allows you and your cat(s) to enjoy life each and every day.
