Meet the Candidate Brian Walters Running for Newhall School District Area1

I’ve served 13 years on the Newhall School District Governing Board. We’ve made it the #1 rated elementary district in the state of California, weathered the pandemic and made sure while I was Board President that we were the first elementary school district in LA County with students safely back in-person. We have a balanced budget without teacher layoffs while giving teachers and staff raises. I felt I was leaving things in good hands. Then Jeff Pelzel, NSD superintendent, unexpectedly resigned, citing burnout from the pandemic. We replaced him with Dr. Leticia Hernandez, a local success story. But Dr. Hernandez is still a first-time superintendent who has not been in our district since she was a student. We also lost several other key employees to retirement. I realized I couldn’t leave now and let down our stakeholders who have rightfully come to expect excellence in all that we do.
