Is It Time To Get a New Pet?
In 2012 I adopted an adult miniature schnauzer named Rocky. Rocky is the logo for my business (the schnauzer in the heart) as he was my heart for so many years. He was vivacious, stubborn and the cutest thing known to man. Rocky was my companion, protector and helped me pass my veterinary medical boards. In 2015 when I met my fiancé, although I did not think it was possible, it was difficult to know who loved him more. Rocky crossed the rainbow bridge this past year. The love we shared could never be replaced, after he passed, I did not want another dog, I just wanted my Rocky back.
I struggled for over a year with the thought of getting a new dog. Rocky was a rescue, but I am not sure who saved who, I loved him so much and the thought of getting a new dog felt like a betrayal to him. Recently, my finance and myself have adopted two dogs. Although my cat is my world and the apple of my eye, I missed having a dog. Dogs are not selfish, and I know Rocky would not want me to be alone. I am so grateful to have the love and companionship of a dog again. Adopting these new dogs is a tribute to the love that Rocky and I shared. I am so grateful to another furry companion and to give these rescues a great home.
After the loss of a pet, it is important to grieve the loss and make peace with the pet that has passed. If other people in the household are still grieving it may be too soon. Having a household meeting may help. It is important to remember that pets grieve too, your other pet may be sad or lonely without their companion however adding a new pet is not always the best solution. If you have a senior pet, a rambunctious puppy or kitten may not be the best fit. It is also important to consider your own needs, having a pet is a lot of responsibility. Your beloved pet will never be replaced but adopting a new pet is a terrific way to honor that love and create lasting memories. The human animal bond is such a wonderful thing.
