Bonding Is Better In Water
Parents-to-be hear a lot about the importance of bonding with their new baby, but what does that mean? What is the parent-child bond? How does it develop? And why is it important?
Bonding refers to the secure emotional attachment between a baby and parent (or any primary caregiver). It gives your child a secure “base” from which to explore his world, and a place where he is comforted when that world becomes scary. The bond buffers stress and instills confidence. He may be more willing to try new things if he trusts that Mom and Dad will help if needed, whether he is taking his first steps or going away to college. Children that have a strong parent-child bond grow into adults that are better able to develop fulfilling relationships, maintain emotional balance, and rebound from disappointment.
One of the best ways to strengthen the bond with your child is through skin-to-skin contact. Humans require touch to survive. Babies that are not held enough can suffer from failure-to-thrive syndrome. Activities in water naturally increase skin-to-skin contact, whether you’re climbing in the bathtub with your baby, or playing in a pool or spa. Babies love being in the water and receiving your focused attention. Make sure to allow him enough movement to satisfy his curiosity as he explores the aquatic environment, but maintain a secure hold to reassure him of your presence. A formal parent-n-me swim program will teach you how to balance security and freedom at every stage of child development, as well as give you plenty of bonding time with your baby away from the stress of everyday life. You and your child will enjoy time spent in the water, and the benefits will last for years to come.
