A Brief History of Sewers – Bob’s Rooter & Plumbing
Before sewers were a standard item included in the construction of every home, people would have to dispose of their waste in highly unsanitary ways which ended up polluting waterways that were commonly also the source of the city’s water supply. The absence of a safe way to remove our waste contributed to the outbreak and spread of deadly diseases such as cholera and typhoid. During the mid 1800’s a very ambitious plan was proposed and the first American sewer system was built in Chicago. It was so vital to public health that the entire city had to be raised up several feet in order to accommodate the new sewer system and to ensure that it had the slope necessary for the waste to reach its destination. There were many faults at first but with the evolution of the modern sewer system and the introduction of waste water treatment soon after, the death rate from waterborne disease in Chicago plummeted.
Your sewer ensures waste leaves your home safely which helps protect you and your family from illness. This makes your sewer arguably the most important part of your plumbing system but we don’t think about what happens after we flush our toilets. We flush and the waste just disappears as if by magic. Why should you think about it? Thousands of years of engineering and development have been done in order to get us to the point where we now have toilets that just sit there full of water waiting to transport our waste from a little room in our home all the way to the sewage plant, wherever that might be, through a complex system of underground piping starting with your sewer so it is important to make sure your sewer is uncompromised.
