America’s Favorite Flower – Green Thumb Garden Center
It would be difficult to imagine a landscaped garden without roses. With ample sun, average water, and good air circulation, roses can be enjoyed by almost anyone.
Rose varieties are broken up into several classifications. The smaller, heavily blooming varieties are called floribundas. These plants are generally rounded shrubs with multiple blooms per stem. They make excellent landscape accents and come in all the typical rose colors. Some examples of floribunda roses include Iceberg, Angel Face, and Show biz.
The taller roses with single florist quality flowers borne on long stems are called hybrid teas. Well-known varieties such as Mr. Lincoln, Peace and Double Delight are examples of hybrid teas.
A third rose classification is a cross between the hybrid tea and floribunda known as the grandiflora rose. These plants often have multiple flowers per stem, yet have blossoms as large as the hybrid teas. Examples of common grandiflora roses include Sonia, Queen Elizabeth and Ole.
Most rose varieties are available as tree roses. Tree roses may be used in the landscape as accents, or lining walkways and entrance-ways.
Another class of rose is the climbing rose. These roses grow as vines, and make very colorful espaliers. They can be used to brighten otherwise dull-looking fences, arbors and pergolas. Some common varieties of climbing roses include Don Juan, Golden Showers, and Joseph’s Coat.
Spring is an excellent time to shop for blooming roses. Most plants are in full bloom allowing for the comparison of color and fragrance. Choose plants that look full and healthy. Plant roses in a sunny, well-drained area and enjoy!
