Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) – The Cat Doctor & Friends
Throughout years of research, the main takeaway from several of these articles to feline owners is that it is safest to keep all of their cats inside and do not allow them outside. While this is a great idea to follow, there is much more to it than just keeping them inside–it is also keeping them healthy and maintaining the proper health status of all of your cats in your household.
Many people are not aware of the viruses that can be contagious to cats. Two of the most important are Feline Leukemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. When a new kitten or adult cat is adopted from the shelter, it should be top priority to not only make sure they are vaccinated properly and otherwise healthy, but also tested for these viruses. Neither of these viruses necessarily mean an immediate grave prognosis, however, if a cat tests positive for either virus you should be educated on what to do next.
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is less common now due to vaccinations. This virus is spread through saliva, nasal secretions, urine, semen, feces and even milk of infected cats. Because of this, it is easily transferred during times of mutual grooming, bite wounds as well as sharing feeding dishes and litter boxes. The average lifespan of cats that contract FeLV is 2.5 years from the original diagnosis.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is another common infectious disease in cats. This virus is similar to HIV in that there are 2 stages–one healthy and then one immunocompromised. Most FIV positive cats tend to live 10 years or more after diagnosis if they live a fairly protected life.
Despite the fact that a positive diagnosis of either of these viruses may be devastating, especially if you have just adopted the cat, continuing to monitor your cat’s appetite, elimination habits, activity levels, and physical appearance (especially weight, eyes and mouth) are all important factors in helping them live a quality life as long as they may be with your family.
