Stress Related Dental Problems – Kimberly A. Rosen , DDS
Working, schooling and social relationships can become overwhelming at times, resulting in stress. For most people who are stressed, a visit to the dentist is the last thing on their mind.
However, stress can lead to a number of issues including oral health problems. Although, dental care may seem like an insignificant expense that’s at the bottom of the priority list, holding off on routine dental care may cause more extensive damage leading to a more expensive treatment.
For example, a frequent dental problem occurring from stress is knows as bruxism or teeth grinding. If left untreated, problems with the temporo mandibular joint, (TMJ) are likely to occur. Breakage and chipping are also a frustrating and costly result. In order to prevent these problems from occurring ,you should consult your dentist. They can provide a night guard or other appliances that will help.
Stress can also lead to an involuntary decrease in oral care. People under stress often skip brushing and flossing. As for those who turn to sugary sweets, they are increasing their chances of getting tooth decay. Others obtain mouth sores, also known as canker sores from lack of proper oral care.
One preventive step in helping with stress and oral health is having straight teeth; easy attainable with Invisalign known as clear braces. Once teeth are aligned properly, they are much easier to floss and keep clean. That way, when stressful times come around you don’t have to worry about working twice as hard to keep and maintain a good oral health.
It is very important to continue your dental and hygiene visits regularly especially when you are significantly stressed out. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the office of Kimberly A. Rosen , DDS at 661-255-2545.
