The Importance of Yearly Wellness Exams – The Cat Doctor
Most of our clients understand that regular wellness exams can help their cat live a long, happy life. However, not everyone understands the importance of these exams. Cats can be masters of disguise when it comes to illness. If they were to show sickness, their instincts tell them they can be easy prey. In some cases, if an illness is left untreated, it can be too late for your veterinarian to help.
Often times we see your cat as a kitten and then not again until they are sick. During the past 3 years and much like the human hospitals, we too experienced patients coming in that were very sick. Much sicker than we normally see most likely due to the pandemic, the restrictions, and the emotions we all experienced. We do make it easier for cats to come in with our “Happy Cat Kit” or “Spa Kit”. These kits will help with anxiety and are available to our clients for a very low cost.
During your cat’s wellness exam here at The Cat Doctor & Friends, we will discuss the 3 facets of cat health. The first being a thorough history and physical exam (eyes, ears, nose, throat, skin, coat, listen to the heart, and palpate internal organs), including a careful exam of your cat’s teeth, an assessment of your cat’s nutrition, and a discussion of behavior and emotional health. Our doctors find that they need 30-minute appointments to address all the components of a complete wellness exam.
Sometimes people may feel that their cat is indoors only and doesn’t need an exam yearly. While indoor cats do avoid many diseases and injuries, they still need regular exams. The most common problems we see are dental disease, which can be quite painful and nutrition-related problems like obesity, diabetes, bladder stones, and gastrointestinal disease. Regular wellness exams can uncover or even better prevent these costly health challenges.
To put it in human terms, if your cat hasn’t had an exam in 2 years, that’s comparable to you skipping visits to your doctor or dentist for 10 years!
We are now seeing patients on Saturdays. Appointments are from 9am to 4pm. Call one of our friendly receptionists today and take the first step toward a longer, healthier life for your cat.
We look forward to seeing you! To schedule an appointment call us at 661-259-5288.
