How To Prevent Heatstroke This Summer – No Place Like Home
Protecting your pet from heat is crucial especially in Santa Clarita’s summer months. To keep your pet safe and comfortable during hot weather make sure your pet has a cool, shaded area to retreat to when outdoors. This could be a covered patio, a tree, or any other spot where they can escape the direct sunlight. Ensure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water. On hot days, consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to help keep it cool. During extreme heat, it’s important to minimize your pet’s time spent outdoors. Engage in low-intensity activities and provide indoor entertainment instead. Brachycephalic’s cats and dogs such as Frenchies are very susceptible to heat stroke.
It is best to try to schedule your walks during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Walking on hot pavement can burn your pet’s paws, so check the ground temperature with your hand before taking them out. It is important to remember that in the heat of the day at temperatures over 77 degrees Fahrenheit, asphalt temperatures can reach 125 degrees. Unfortunately at temperatures of 125 degrees or higher, skin destruction can occur in as little as 60 seconds. During warm days it’s best to put the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds, if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog paws.
The temperature inside a parked car can rise rapidly, even with the windows cracked. Leaving your pet unattended in a car can lead to heatstroke and even death. If you can’t bring your pet inside with you, it’s best to leave them at home.
The symptoms of heatstroke in pets is excessive panting, difficulty breathing, collapse, disorientation, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, offer water to drink, and seek veterinary attention immediately. If you have concerns about your pet’s ability to handle the heat or if they have any preexisting health conditions, consult with your veterinarian for specific advice and recommendations. Remember, it’s important to prioritize your pet’s safety and comfort during the hot weather. By following these tips, you can help protect your furry friend from the heat and keep them happy and healthy.
