What Should I Do In My Garden This Season? – The Grass Is Always Greener Designs
The weather has been gloomy in May and June but lovely, and there is still a tinge of spring in the air so many people are reaching out to me to design and install their gardens. Great news for me, but it is pretty much too late to be planting in Santa Clarita.
It is time to shift our thinking away from East Coast gardening and into Southern California gardening. Summer in Southern California is all about planning, weeding, mulching, and protecting our plants. Welcoming nature into your garden by providing shelter and water for birds and pollinators is great mission for this season as well. Summer time preparation and research, could also include visits to beautiful gardens in Southern California where you can take (photos and) note of what is blooming and thriving around you, this will help you plan what you want to plant in the fall.
Fall is the best time to plant here because the soil is still warm which will help stimulate root growth, while at the same time the days become shorter and the sun is lower in the sky there is also more humidity to be found so there will be less heat and your plants will be less stressed. With any luck we’ll have some nice rains again this year, so your plants can send out deep roots and become well established so that they can withstand the heat next summer and thrive.
If you need a little help or inspiration, feel free to reach out to talk to me about your garden. I’d love to help you re-design your current garden, or create a new one with you. I love lawn removal and outdoor living projects, and enjoy creating native and climate appropriate gardens. Enjoy your summer, and remember… keep on weeding!
