Feline Asthma – Copper Hill Animal Clinic
Did you know that cats can get asthma too? That’s right! Many people are surprised to learn this about cats. In our feline patients, pet owners may notice that their cat seems to have episodes of coughing on a chronic basis. This often looks like the cat is trying to “cough up a hairball,” but may find that the coughing is not productive and no hairball has been produced. Many cats hunch their body close to the ground and extend their necks forward in a characteristic posture. Sometimes cats will vomit from the excessive coughing. Other signs or symptoms that can be seen include wheezing, rapid breathing, or exercise intolerance.
So what exactly is feline asthma anyway? Feline asthma is best understood as an allergic respiratory condition, similar to asthma in people. Immune cells in the airways trigger the production of substances that promote inflammation in the lungs. This causes irritation, swelling, and constriction of the airways which makes it difficult to breathe. In some cats, this can lead to acute respiratory distress, which may require emergency treatment.
How is feline asthma diagnosed and treated? A diagnosis is often multifactorial, based on the patient’s history, physical examination, x-rays, and response to treatment. A specialist may also evaluate the immune cells from an airway sample known as bronchoalveolar lavage. The goal of treatment is to reduce inflammation in the lungs. This can be achieved with daily steroid administration given orally or with an inhaler. However, inhaled steroid treatment is preferred due to fewer side effects than oral steroids. With treatment, cats can live comfortably and happily for many years.
