110 Years of Wins Against Cancer – American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is celebrating a momentous year. Founded in 1913, 2023 marks its 110th anniversary. For eleven decades, ACS has led the fight against every cancer for every life. Because of dedicated volunteers like those here in the Santa Clarita Valley, today there are over 18 million cancer survivors who will get to celebrate with their families this holiday season.
As early as 1948, ACS pushed for wide adoption of pap testing which has since decreased cervical cancer deaths by 70%. In 1954, an ACS study confirmed the link between smoking and lung cancer which led to a 50% decrease in smoking. In 1973, an ACS-funded study proved that mammography is the best tool for early breast cancer detection. Since 2012, rates of cervical cancer have stabilized overall but have deeply dropped by about 65% for women ages 20-24. This reflects the impact of HPV vaccination on successful cancer prevention.
In 2022, the organization celebrated the 50th ACS-funded researcher to win the Nobel Prize. By funding and conducting research, ACS has helped to create a world where cancer mortality has declined 33% since 1991, when the cancer death rate was at its peak, resulting in 3.8 million deaths averted.
In addition to research and advocacy, the American Cancer Society is committed to improving the lives of cancer patients and their families. In 1970, ACS opened the first Hope Lodge, a free home away from home for cancer patients going through treatment. In 1997, ACS launched the first 24/7 cancer helpline for patients and their loved ones. Trained Cancer Information Specialists answer questions and connect patients and caregivers with valuable resources and support.
These and other wins against cancer are thanks to the 1.5 million volunteers who support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving efforts to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. From volunteering, to providing cancer patients rides to treatment, to planning events and raising funds through the local Relay For Life, you can fight back against cancer. Sign up today for the 2024 Relay event, start fundraising, or donate to the American Cancer Society with an end-of-year gift at www.scvrelay.org.
Together we can end cancer as we know it, for everyone.
