Monthly Message from City Manager Ken Striplin Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk
The new year presents numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is a chance to set goals, discover yourself and explore your surroundings. As we approach Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15, 2024, it is an ideal time for introspection and a commitment to making a positive impact through our words and deeds.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day serves as a reminder of the strength that comes from unity and collective efforts toward shared objectives. Reflecting on Dr. King’s fundamental principles empowers us to instigate the changes we wish to see. I invite you and your family to join the City of Santa Clarita’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity Walk, scheduled for Monday, January 15, at 9:00 a.m. at Central Park (27150 Bouquet Canyon Road). This event brings residents together to listen to guest speakers and honor Dr. King’s legacy as you walk side by side through the tranquil landscape. The MLK Day Unity Walk is open to the public, with no advance registration required.
After the Unity Walk, I encourage you to engage in community service as part of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day National Day of Service. This federal holiday encourages cooperation among people through volunteerism. This may involve volunteering for local nonprofits, cleaning up your neighborhood or supporting organizations assisting the homeless, veterans or single-parent households. Another great way to find volunteer opportunities is through the City’s volunteer program. To see what is available and for more information, please visit SantaClaritaVolunteers.com.
As you delve into your New Year’s resolutions like healthier living, increased exercise and vacation plans, I encourage you to also incorporate some goals that are in service of others. Your time, resources and consideration can significantly impact someone’s life. I look forward to your participation in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity Walk and wish you all a great start to the new year.
