Winter Tips for Keeping Your Pets Safe and Cozy
With winter comes chilly temperatures (even in California) it’s essential to ensure the well-being of our furry friends. Pets require special care during the colder months to keep them safe, comfortable, and healthy. Here are some winter tips to help you make the season enjoyable for your pets.
It is always best that dogs and cats are kept indoors during inclement weather. If they are going to spend any time outdoors, please provide a warm and dry shelter for your pets, especially if they spend a significant amount of time outside. Make sure their shelter is insulated and raised off the ground to prevent heat loss.
For short-haired or small pets, consider using pet sweaters or jackets to keep them warm during walks. However, avoid dressing them in clothing that restricts movement or could cause discomfort.
Maintain your pet’s coat by keeping it clean and well-groomed. A well-insulated coat provides better protection against the cold. However, avoid shaving long-haired breeds during winter, as their fur provides natural insulation.
Ensure your pet has access to fresh water at all times. Winter air can be dry, leading to dehydration. If your pet spends time outdoors, check their water bowl frequently to prevent it from freezing.
While some pets may enjoy day trips to the snow, prolonged exposure to low temperatures can lead to hypothermia or frostbite, particularly in ears, paws, and tails. Keep your pets active with indoor playtime.
Antifreeze is toxic to pets and has a sweet taste that can attract them. Be cautious when using or storing anti-freeze and clean up any spills immediately. Consider using pet-safe alternatives.
Schedule a winter check- with your veterinarian to address any specific concerns related to the season. Discuss nutrition, exercise routines, and any changes in behavior.
Taking a few extra precautions will go a long way in making winter an enjoyable season for both you and your furry companions. For more information about No Place Like Home please email info@noplacelikehome.vet or call/text 818-400-1986.
