Ketamine A Breakthrough in Mental Health – Healthy Mind Psychiatry
Ketamine therapy is a relatively new and potentially life-changing treatment for tough-to-treat depression. Several scientific studies, including those conducted at Yale University and the National Institute of Mental Health, have shown that low dose intravenously administered ketamine can dramatically improve symptoms associated with depression and many anxiety disorders.
Ketamine works differently than traditional antidepressants and is often effective when Antidepressants fail. Ketamine produces profound and rapid antidepressant effects in one to four hours. Ketamine has the power to shape us in a positive way and thoughts and heal through understanding and insight.
Mechanism of action of Ketamine?
The primary mechanism of action of Ketamine is binding to the NMDA receptor and releases a glutamate surge. Glutamate is an important neurotransmitter in your brain which releases growth factors, like BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which will help make new synaptic connections and improve communication between neurons and can create new neural pathways.
What can I expect during ketamine therapy?
All new patients have a series of six infusions spaced over two or three weeks. Each IV infusion is 45 minutes long. You will receive your infusions in a comfortable, calming environment, and we will continue to monitor your vitals during your therapy for your own health and safety. Most patients experience a significant relief during the series, and many remain symptom free for extended periods of time following the initial treatment protocol.
