Relay For Life: Achieving Wins Against Cancer
The familiar greeting “May the Force be with you” took on added significance at the American Cancer Society’s 26th annual Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley held on May the Fourth. This year’s Star Wars theme, May the Cure Be with You, emphasized the good will, commitment and support that underscore the American Cancer Society’s mission.
The SCV Relay event brought together 1,140 participants from the community to celebrate cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones, and raise funds to end cancer. The event recognized 224 survivors, honoring them with cheers from participants as they walked the first lap.
Sixty-eight fundraising teams worked tirelessly throughout the year to prepare for the event which raised over $284,000 toward the goal of $300,000. These donations fund groundbreaking research, cancer advocacy at all levels of government, and services such as free rides to treatment and free lodging during treatment. The funds also provide programs including support groups, survivor networks, and a 24/7 live cancer helpline.
The American Cancer Society relies on the strength of millions of dedicated, passionate volunteers who won’t stop until they make the world free from cancer. Abby Smith, ACS senior development manager, explains, “We couldn’t do what we do without the commitment of our volunteers and donors. We thank all those who generously invested their time and money to make this event successful.” Smith would like to acknowledge the sponsors for the 2024 Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley including UCLA Health, Daiichi Sankyo, Keck Medicine of USC and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.
If you were not able to attend the event, there is still time to donate. Fundraising will continue until August 31st. You can help Relay For Life of Santa Clarita Valley to reach its $300,000 goal. Join ACS in working to end cancer as we know it for everyone, by ensuring that all people have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
