Taking Bad Advice – Law Offices of Richard A. Marcus
Last summer, I bought two fantastic jet skis. The only problem was, I had no idea how to get them into the water. A friend and his daughter came over last week, and we finally managed to tow them to Ventura Harbor using my Mercedes R350. Getting them into the water was easy. My friend parked the car and trailer, tossed the key in the jet ski’s center compartment, and we were off.
About two and a half hours later, we discovered that the center compartment wasn’t watertight, and my fob was submerged in salt water. When we got back and tied the skis to the dock, the key was completely fried. I could use the metal insert to get into the car, but the key wouldn’t turn, and none of the buttons worked. My best plan was to Uber my friend home so he could return with his SUV to get the skis out of the water and then call AAA to tow the R350 home. However, we had a problem: no masks, so there went the Uber idea.
I then called another friend with a lot of mechanical experience. He suggested using WD-40, but we didn’t have any. Instead, he recommended hand sanitizer. We had that. He advised me to douse the entire fob with Purell, take it apart, and let it sit inside the car on the dashboard to dry in the sun. After it dried, I was to use the metal key insert, insert it into the keyhole, and jiggle it vigorously while someone else tried to start the car. It sounded ridiculous, but I decided to try. After the Purell bath and some drying time, I touched the remote and it actually lit up. A few minutes later, the doors locked and unlocked. Then, like in a bad horror movie, the stereo turned on and started playing music. I took that as a sign.
I urged my friend to do the jiggle dance with the metal key. He furiously moved it back and forth, and I tried to start the car. The key turned, and the car started. Unbelievable! We backed the car in, loaded the skis, and drove home.
The moral of the story: What might seem like bad advice from a professional can sometimes turn out to be the best advice of all!
