Mission Opera to Present American Opera ‘Cold Sassy Tree’ By Carlisle Floyd Set in the early 1900s in rural Georgia
Mission Opera opens its 7th Season with ‘Cold Sassy Tree’ by Carlisle Floyd, an American opera set in 1906 rural Georgia, based on the novel by Olive Ann Burns. There will be two performances on October 26 and 27 at 2:00 pm at Canyon High School Performing Arts Center in Santa Clarita.
Mission Opera, specializing in American opera and musical theater, produces high-quality, accessible productions, providing jobs in the arts sector and fostering educational outreach. ‘Cold Sassy Tree’ is the second work by Floyd in Mission Opera’s repertoire, following ‘Susannah’ in June 2023. Artistic Director Dr. Joshua Wentz, who worked closely with Floyd, directs the show, and Charlie Kim debuts as the conductor, with Lindsay Aldana as Music Director.
Carlisle Floyd, considered a key figure in American opera, is known for works like ‘Susannah,’ ‘Of Mice and Men,’ and ‘Cold Sassy Tree.’ His operas capture American life, using hymns, spirituals, and jazz to shape an American operatic style.
The opera features a multimedia design on a 48’ LED screen, blending traditional theater with contemporary video design. The performance lasts 2 hours and 25 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.
Synopsis: Rucker Lattimore plans to marry his employee Love Simpson shortly after his wife’s death, causing a stir in the town. Love faces initial rejection but gradually wins over the townspeople. The story explores themes of love, acceptance, and change.
