Why Does Pond Water Temperature Matter? Santa Clarita Koi & Water Garden Club
Here in the SCV, we are fortunate to have an excellent climate for koi keeping. Koi prefer water temperatures of 65°F to 75°F but can survive from 35°F to 85°F.
However, the size of the pond matters. Larger ponds have slower temperature change and lower temperatures. Unshaded smaller ponds may have more rapid temperature change and higher temperatures. Measure pond water temperature with a pond thermometer or digital monitor. Do not rely on weather forecasts or air temperature. Most ponds have up to a 5°F variation in 24 hours, but koi can survive almost double that.
Temperature is lowest in the morning and highest towards sunset. Dissolved oxygen levels fluctuate with temperature. The higher the temperature, the lower the dissolved oxygen level. The lower the temperature, the higher the dissolved oxygen level. Air pumps and air diffusers are a must. Population control (not overcrowding of koi or plants) is very important as is water circulation.
Each koi food brand and type (all season, growth, color, etc.) suggests feeding frequency based on temperature, assuming food is consumed within 5 minutes. Overfeeding causes death!
The SCV Koi & Water Garden Club welcomes people who are exploring adding a pond or water garden or already have one. We meet in one another’s homes and gardens once every month. Our membership has many decades of experience that they are happy to share. Contact the https://www.santaclaritakoiclub.com/ at info@SantaClaritaKoiClub.com.
