How to Appreciate Koi
Koi appreciation begins with the Gosanke group (Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa), the big three of Japanese Nishikigoi (Koi). In general, the sharper the delineation of colors, the more desirable the koi.
Kohaku, the most popular variety, are two-colored koi with a white (shiro) body and red (hi) patches or sections. Usually two, three or four red sections.
Sanke are three-colored koi with a white (shiro) body, red (hi) patches like the Kohaku and black (sumi) spots on the upper body, but no black (sumi) spots on the head.
Showa are three-colored koi with a black (sumi) banded body, black markings on the head, with red (hi) and white (shiro) patterns.
Although Showa and Sanke may look similar, Showa have black on the head, Sanke do not have black on the head.
Enjoying koi is observing the beauty of their colors, patterns, and movements.
Koi are intelligent social creatures that interact with other koi and humans. When hand feeding, there is opportunity to see them close-up and learn their personalities.
In Japanese culture, the colors of koi fish are not only beautiful, but they also have symbolic meaning. Observing your koi may remind you of these qualities. White: Purity, peace, and good luck. Red: Love, passion, and energy. Black: Strength, power, and mystery.
Lastly, Koi appreciation includes community and sharing experiences. Contact the SCV Koi & Water Garden Club at info@SantaClaritaKoiClub.com we meet in one another’s homes and gardens once every month.
