Reducing the Risk of Breast Cancer Through Breastfeeding – Kaiser Permanente
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time to spread awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and offer support to those affected. Kaiser Permanente in the Santa Clarita Valley and beyond is highlighting the significant role that breastfeeding can play in reducing the risk of breast cancer for mothers.
Kaiser Permanente’s dedicated inpatient and outpatient lactation teams are committed to supporting and educating new mothers. Since its establishment in 1998, the Great Starts program collaborates closely with OB/Gyn clinic and pediatrics offices to promote breastfeeding during hospital stays and at home. Impressively, over 90% of deliveries at Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center benefit from comprehensive post-hospital discharge appointments, fostering a nurturing environment for both mothers and babies.
Benefits of Breastfeeding in Reducing Breast Cancer Risk
Reduced Risk of Breast Cancer: Breastfeeding for six months or longer lowers the risk of both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer due to hormonal changes that reduce cumulative estrogen exposure.
Hormonal Impact: Breastfeeding can delay menstruation and reduces menstrual cycles, lowering cumulative exposure to estrogen and progesterone, which can decrease breast cancer risk.
Weight Management: Breastfeeding aids postpartum weight loss and helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of obesity, which is linked as a risk factor for breast cancer.
Enhanced Immune Function: Breast milk is rich in antibodies and nutrients, boosting the infant’s immune system and offering protection against infections, benefiting both mother and child.
Psychosocial Benefits: Breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child, through skin-to-skin contact releasing a hormone called oxytocin.
“We offer virtual classes, in-person support groups, and resources like QR codes for easy access to information and services,” says Phyllis Oskooie, RN, of the Great Starts outpatient lactation team. “By partnering with different departments, we ensure mothers receive comprehensive support throughout their breastfeeding journey.”
