Seeing Squiggly Lines? What Those Floaters Mean for Your Vision! – Evergreen Retina

by | Nov 29, 2024 | Medical

Floaters are tiny specks, threads, or cobweb-like shapes that drift across your field of vision. They are common, especially as we age, and are usually caused by changes in the vitreous, the gel-like substance that fills the inside of your eye. The vitreous shrinks, it can pull away from the retina, leading to the appearance of floaters. Most of the time, they’re harmless and don’t interfere much with vision.
However, certain situations require immediate attention from a retina specialist:
• Sudden Onset of Thousands of Floaters: If you notice a sudden storm of floaters, this could be a sign of a retinal tear or detachment.
• Floaters After Trauma: Eye injuries can lead to serious retinal conditions, making it critical to see a specialist if floaters appear after an accident.
• Flashes of Light : If floaters are accompanied by flashes or a shadow across your vision, it may indicate a more severe problem that can lead to vision loss if untreated.
• Shadows or curtain: If you see a dark curtain moving across your vision this could be a sign of a retinal detachment.
In some cases, severe or persistent floaters can be treated with vitrectomy, a procedure where the vitreous gel is removed and replaced with a clear solution. This can significantly improve vision, especially for those whose floaters are affecting daily life.
We encourage everyone to seek prompt care if experiencing a sudden increase in floaters, especially after any injury or if accompanied by flashes of light or a curtain-like shadow in vision. Early diagnosis and treatment by a retina specialist can protect your sight and reduce the risk of long-term damage.
Our mission at Evergreen Retina is to support you in preserving your vision and ensuring you see clearly for years to come.
