Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy: Prevention and Treatment – Evergreen Retina
As a retina specialist, one of the most important aspects of eye care I focus on is the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. This condition is a leading cause of blindness in adults, yet with early detection and proper management, significant vision loss can often be avoided. It all begins with diabetes.
Diabetic retinopathy develops when high blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Over time, these damaged vessels leak fluid or bleed, leading to swelling or scarring. Early on, the condition may not cause noticeable symptoms, which is why regular eye exams are essential for anyone with diabetes. If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can lead to severe vision impairment and even blindness.
Prevention starts with effective diabetes management. Keeping blood sugar levels within the target range is crucial to preventing damage to the blood vessels in the eyes. Additionally, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels, maintaining a healthy diet, and staying active all contribute to reducing the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Regular eye exams are vital because they allow for early detection and intervention, when treatment is most effective.
If diabetic retinopathy is detected, several treatments are available. In the early stages, managing blood sugar and blood pressure may suffice. However, for more advanced cases, treatments such as laser therapy or panretinal photocoagulation (to prevent abnormal vessels and bleeding from occurring), intravitreal injections (to reduce swelling and prevent further damage), or even surgery may be necessary.
If you have diabetes, don’t wait for symptoms to appear before seeing an eye doctor. Regular check-ups and proactive management of your diabetes can help protect your vision and prevent diabetic retinopathy from affecting your quality of life. Your eyes are worth the effort!
