Why Floor Coating Definitely Isn’t a DIY Job? – ALLBRiGHT PAINTING
Whether you’re renovating your garage to be a living space or a better showcase for your Maserati, that old, stained, cracked floor has got to go. When considering flooring solutions, take into account your budget, your needs, and whether or not you’ll be tackling this job yourself.
Some floor coating systems require a professional application. Polyurea is one such floor coating that’s definitely not a DIY project.
What is Polyurea Floor Coating?
Polyurea is similar to epoxy in that it provides a smooth, glossy finish, but it has several advantages over epoxy. Polyurea forms a strong, fast bond with a concrete substrate, but it’s more flexible and durable than epoxy. That’s because polyurea is a type of elastomer. It will move with the floor, which you want for a garage in earthquake-prone Los Angeles.
3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Apply a Polyurea Floor Coating Yourself
It requires meticulous floor prep: Good surface preparation is the key to the material properly penetrating and adhering to the surface. Your garage floor is loaded with contaminants — battery acid, motor oil, antifreeze, grease, etc. — that will interfere with the bonding process. The floor will have to be chemically treated with a commercial-grade degreaser. It will be necessary to grind the surface down to open the concrete floors mechanically. All cracks and expansion joints will have to be filled, among many other steps that the average DIY will overlook.
Polyurea is tricky to work with: Polyurea is extremely unforgiving, and it’s cures FAST. A polyurea floor system includes a basecoat, a blend of flakes, and a polyurea topcoat. That gives you three opportunities to make a mistake. You’ll have one shot to apply it right.
Overspray can be disastrous: Our technicians not only know how to operate the application equipment, but they’re also extremely diligent when it comes to protecting your property. Overspray is a very real hazard. That’s why we mask the area to ensure all fixtures and vertical surfaces are covered. We even pay attention to the direction the wind is blowing.
