Buying a Home with an Existing Pond
When purchasing a home with an existing pond, there are important questions to ask the seller. First, is the pond come with the house, including the fish? If so, continue the conversation with general questions about the pond.
Ask about the Ponds history, the age of the pond, and any existing or past problems, such as leaks. Inquire about the pump and filter, cleaning procedures and frequency, the presence of a UV light and its age, and whether there are water test kits and instructions on how to use them. Learn how to use water dechlorinator when adding water, and whether the pond design includes circulation, bottom drains, mechanical, filtration, and aeration. Ensure the power to the pond is properly installed, and water tight with a GFI outlet connected. Ask about pond plants and their names, whether the fish show any signs of illness, and how the fish food is stored to prevent spoilage.
Have there been any predators, such as Igrets, herons, raccoons, or possums, trying to get the fish? What is the Ponds volume and how it is measured? How deep is the pond, and is there any protection for the fish?
