How to Safely Evacuate Your Pets in an Emergency – No Place Like Home
Emergencies can happen quickly, and having a well-thought-out plan for evacuating your pets can save their lives.
During an emergency, pets can become frightened and hide, making evacuation difficult. If you have advance warning, using treats or their favorite food place them in a contained room where they can not hide in a bathroom or pantry to prevent them from running away. This will make it easier to apply a leash or put them in a carrier to collect them quickly when it’s time to leave.
Cats can be especially difficult to handle in high-stress situations. If your cat resists being placed in a carrier, gently place them in a pillowcase first. This helps keep them calm and contained, allowing you to transfer them more easily into their carrier. While this may seem unconventional, it is a safe and effective way to transport a frightened cat in an emergency.
Prepare a pet emergency kit with essentials, including:
– A sturdy carrier for each pet
– Leashes and harnesses
– Food, water, and bowls (at least 3 days’ worth)
– Medications and medical records
– A comfort item (blanket, toy, or bedding)
– Recent photos and ID tags in case they get lost
Identify pet-friendly hotels, shelters, or friends and family who can take in your pets. Keep a list of emergency contacts and veterinarians in different areas.
Pets can sense your stress, so staying calm will help them feel more secure. If possible, evacuate early to avoid chaotic last-minute situations. By preparing ahead of time, you can ensure a smoother, safer evacuation for both you and your pets.
