Understanding Retinal Vein Occlusions: Why Early Diagnosis and Treatment Matter – Evergreen Retina
A retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a blockage in the veins of the eye that can cause sudden, painless vision loss. This condition is more common in older adults and people with high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
If you have an RVO, you may notice blurry or distorted vision. The severity can vary—some people have mild symptoms, while others experience significant vision loss.
1. How Is RVO Diagnosed?
During an eye exam, we look for signs such as swollen, twisted veins and small areas of bleeding inside the eye. We use special imaging tests, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography, to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of the condition.
2.Treatment Option
The most effective treatment for swelling in the retina (macular edema) caused by RVO is an anti-VEGF injection, which helps reduce fluid buildup and improve vision. Some patients may also need laser treatment if they are at risk for further complications, such as abnormal blood vessel growth that could lead to glaucoma.
3. Why Early Treatment is Important
Seeing a retina specialist as soon as possible gives you the best chance of preserving your vision. At Evergreen Retina, we use the latest treatments to help patients manage this condition and maintain their eyesight.
